Intake and expenditure of energy among Polish pregnant women with gestational diabetes mellitus – findings from the Physical Activity Monitoring program

Background
A healthy lifestyle, including adequate physical activity, is crucial for patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Objectives
The study aimed to assess the level of physical activity (PA) and estimate the total energy expenditure (TEE) and total energy intake (EI) in a group of patients with GDM as an element of the physical activity monitoring program.

Material and methods
The program comprised an assessment of the level of PA and the total energy TEE among 20 patients with GDM in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy and was made using a multisensory device that contains a 3-axis-accelerometer (SWA), which was worn continuously for 7 days. Estimation of EI was based on seven-day dietary records.

Results
The average TEE of the examined patients was 2.238 kcal (± 346.35 kcal), and only a part of this energy was spent on active energy expenditure (AEE). The average MET was 1.36 ± 0.19. The average daily EI was much lower than the mean Estimated Energy Requirement (EER) per patient.

Conclusions
The results of our physical activity monitoring program have shown that the mean daily EI and mean daily TEE were much lower than the EER. Furthermore, the active energy expenditure among the group of patients was low. Our findings may provide a reference to optimize energy requirement support.
