Abstract
Introduction
: Acne vulgaris is a chronic disorder of the pilosebaceous follicles and it is the most common skin disease treated by dermatologists. It affects 80% of the population and occurs in all age groups. Factors such as follicle hyperkeratinization, proliferation of Propionibacterium acnes and development of inflammation, endocrine disorders and genetic predispositions play an important role in the aetiopathogenesis of this disease. Chronic psychological stress, climate, dietary factors, drugs, cosmetics and inadequate skin hygiene seem to exacerbate the course of acne. The most common psychological response to the disease is low self-esteem, problems in social contacts, embarrassment, anxiety and depression. Both topical and systemic preparations are used in treatment of inflammatory and non-inflammatory acne lesions. Psychological therapy may help in the process of healing.
Aim: The aim of the study was to present the results of a questionnaire study conducted among women and men suffering from acne vulgaris, in various age groups.
Material and methods: The study group consisted of 100 patients suffering from acne aged 11 and over, who completed a specially developed questionnaire. The questions concerned demographic data as well as location and management of acne lesions.
Results and conclusions: The main age group of acne was adolescence, but the adult patients formed a large group. The most common location of acne lesions was the face. Most participants observed an influence of the season of the year and diet on acne exacerbation. Over half of interviewees assessed their acne as moderate. The majority of responders received specialist treatment by dermatologists.
