Aim

Analysis of factors influencing the functional capacity of geriatric patients in neurological departments.

Material and methods

The research process was divided into two stages. The first one was based on a diagnostic survey method, survey technique, and the second one, interview method. The functional capacity of the respondents was evaluated by using below-mentioned research tools: the Barthel scale, used to assess self-service efficiency, IADL scale and the factors shaping it that were evaluated by using proprietary focus interview questionnaire. The study group consisted of 82 geriatric patients hospitalized in neurological departments in the city of Lublin.

Results

The results of the Barthel and IADL scales confirmed functional capacity deficit in the studied patients. Most of the respondents showed varying degrees of intensified problems with mobility. A smaller percentage of patients had difficulties in controlling urination, stool and other activities of daily living. The factors affecting functional capacity of subjects are mode and reason of admission to hospital, physical activity level, presence of pain and level of the possessed knowledge, possibilities, and motivation. Results confirmed indicated additional fields related to factors influencing its level, worth more detailed examination, such as, for example, the location of pain.

Conclusions

Not all the respondents are able to cope with activities of everyday life. It was shown that family and social situations did not have a significant impact on the functional capacity of patients. The respondents express the need to gain knowledge and skills, motivation, and advice on ready-made solutions for coping with limited capacity situations.
