Introduction

The chronic kidney disease is characterized by a slow, progressive and irreversible deterioration of their function, so after some time, it leads to the renal failure and the necessity of hemodialysis. This causes the lower quality of life among affected patients.

Aim of study

The aim of the study was to assess the quality of life of patients who must have hemodialysis due to the chronic renal failure.

Material and methods

The study includes 60 patients with the chronic renal failure, hospitalized in the Department of Nephrology, Hypertension and Internal Diseases of Antoni Jurasz University Hospital No. 1 in Bydgoszcz. A standardized questionnaire named WHOQOL - Bref was used in the study and a questionnaire of our own design.

Results

In the opinion of the respondents, their quality of life was on the medium level and their satisfaction with health on the low level. The factor that had the most significant impact on both these parameters was the financial situation of the respondents. The quality of life in the physical and social sphere was average while in the psychological and environmental sphere – good.

Conclusions

The quality of life of the respondents in all the areas varied between average and good. A better quality of life was presented by people with higher education, living with their families, having a good financial situation, not having complications requiring them to be hospitalized again.
