Negative pressure wound therapy (NPWT) is a mechanical technique in which an underpressure is used to accelerate and facilitate the healing process. The use of vacuum in the treatment, is one of the most modern and effective methods of wound healing. NPWT consists on preparation of a controlled negative pressure directly to the wound which accelerates the healing process. Effective operation of the vacuum bandage is based on the removal of necrotic tissue, inhibition of bacterial growth, reduction of edema, improvement of the blood circulating in the wound and acceleration of formation of granulation tissue.

Nursing tasks are performed at every stage of the therapeutic process, from participation during application of NPWT, through the direct supervision, lowering pain, prevention of complications, to the education of the patient and his family and preparation for self-care.
