Menstrual Irregularity in College-Aged Females: Prevalence and Relation to Some Biological and Life style Factors

The aim
This study was designed to investigate the prevalence of irregular menstruation and its correlation with some of biological and life style factors among college students at Komar University of Science & Technology (KUST) in the academic year 2022-2023.
Methods
In the period from January to May 2023, a total of 250 female students from various departments at KUST were selected randomly for this study. The participants' BMI was determined, and they were given a questionnaire to complete. Additionally, on the second day of their next menstrual cycle, blood samples were collected for both hematological and serological investigations.
Results
Based on the results derived from this study, approximately 33.2% of the Komar university of Science and Technology students that aged from 20-30 years old were experienced irregular menstruation, which could be attributed to either disruptions in their menstrual cycle period or abnormal levels of menstrual bleeding. A significant association (p < 0.05) was observed between irregular menstruation with BMI, daily psychological stress, the presence of bleeding disorder and anemia.
Conclusions
Nearly one-third of the female students at Komar University of Science & Technology (KUST) were suffer from irregular menstruation cycle that could be related to BMI, daily psychological stress, the presence of bleeding disorder and anemia among the participants.
