Increased bioavailability of nitric oxide in the body can be achieved through the consumption of foods rich in nitrates, which might be reduced to nitric oxide. Beetroot juice is a popular product that contains high level of nitrates. It is also said to have lowering effect on blood pressure and antioxidant properties. The importance of anthocyanins is highlighted in research studies aimed to find effective methods for supporting the body’s antioxidant resources and/or reducing vulnerability to oxidative stress. Anthocyanins are present in berries, especially in chokeberries. It was shown that chokeberry juice consumption results in scavenging of reactive oxygen species, limitation of prooxidative reactions and activation of antioxidant enzymes. The aim of the study is to review research, which results indicate the potential benefits of drinking beetroot juice or the chokeberry juice in patients with intermittent claudication.
