Background

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an acquired inflammatory demyelinating disease of the nervous system.

Aim of this study

Analyze factors that determine the level of acceptance of a chronic disease.

Material and methods

The study included 100 individuals (with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis–patients of Neurology Clinic with Stroke Unit, Independent Public Clinical Hospital no 1 in Szczecin). This survey-based study used a standardized questionnaire, the Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS).

Results

The average level of illness acceptance was 29.82 ± 7.98. The mean duration of illnesswas 6.04 ± 5.265 years, and the mean age at the time of diagnosis was 30.66 (SD = 9.617).

Conclusions

The studied group of patients with relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis displayed a high level ofillness acceptance and adaptation to it. The level of illness acceptance is determined by education and employment. It is also closely related to the age at the time of diagnosis. The choice of therapeutic methods depends on the level of illness acceptance.
